Spotlight On… Laura Boswell – Agricultural and Rural Property Law

Laura Boswell

Area of Expertise: Agricultural and Rural Property Law.

“Being both a farmer’s daughter and farmer’s wife, agriculture is not only my chosen career but part of who I am”.

The firm strengthened the support it provides in the rural sector with the appointment in 2013 of Laura Boswell as an Associate dealing with Agricultural Law. Laura has been accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in Agricultural Law, and she is the only such specialist practising in the Lanarkshire area.

Having built a strong reputation for over ten years working in the agricultural and rural property sector, Laura has brought to Gebbie & Wilson experience ranging from the purchase and sale of large estates, farms, forests and country houses. In particular, Laura’s expertise extends to the complexities of splitting titles, windfarm agreements, agricultural tenancy, crofting rights and dealing with rights of access and minerals issues.

And Laura’s role goes far beyond a sound knowledge of existing agricultural law and practice since she must always be on the look-out for changes impacting on her clients. As Laura comments:-“the law as it affects the farming community is ever changing. Land Reform is high on the Scottish Government’s agenda at present as is evident from its intention to bring forward a new Land Reform bill this summer, following the recommendations of the Land Reform Review Group in May last year. Landowners are likely to face expanded community rights to buy land. How this will work and how it is to be funded remain to be seen and I’ll be carefully monitoring the progress of this Bill as it goes through parliament, to be in a position to provide clients with clear, up to date advice”.

Laura’s agricultural property law specialism neatly complements Gebbie & Wilson’s established expertise in property law generally. Each of its Partners – David Murray and Russell Paterson, and Consultant Bob Flynn– has more than 35 years’ experience in residential and commercial property and its Property Manager, Carol Lamont’s property marketing know-how has been earned over her 28 year career as an Estate Agent in Lanarkshire.

With the recent addition of Esme Macfarlane, who specialises in renewable energy, telecoms and general commercial leasing, the property team at Gebbie & Wilson continues to grow. Building on its long established and well respected reputation, the firm is dedicated to providing its clients with the sort of service that we would all wish to receive when dealing with our business—sound advice, good communication and accessibility – but with a personal touch.
